Global market setup
Indian markets open after a third consecutive session of decline. The Sensex fell 813.35 points (-1.08%) to 74,764.23 and the Nifty 50 lost 203.60 points (-0.86%) to 23,431.50, closing below the 23,500 mark. Measured against Friday 4 September, the Nifty is down 1.95% and the Sensex 2.29% so far this week. This decline was market-wide rather than concentrated: BSE breadth showed 1,877 advances against 2,498 declines, and both the Nifty Midcap 100 (-0.51%) and Smallcap 100 (-0.48%) closed lower with the benchmarks. Only two of the eleven major sectorals finished higher, Metal at +1.79% and Energy at +0.63%, while Nifty IT closed 3.24% lower at 28,913.95, Realty fell 2.23% and Financial Services 1.24%. Infosys (-4.34%), HDFC Life (-3.71%), HCL Technologies (-3.70%), Tech Mahindra (-3.27%) and Wipro (-2.62%) were the five largest Nifty 50 decliners; Adani Enterprises (+5.13%), Max Healthcare (+4.48%), Adani Ports (+3.80%) and Coal India (+2.56%) were the only confirmed gainers. The overnight tape offers no relief. Wall Street closed lower for a third session, the Dow down 405.41 points (-0.80%) to 52,380.66, the S and P 500 0.50% lower and the Nasdaq Composite 0.60% lower, with small caps weakest as the Russell 2000 fell 1.30%. US 10-year yields sit in the 4.80 to 4.84% area at fresh 52-week highs. Crude is the common factor: Brent moved above USD 100 a barrel for the first time since July, with WTI reported at USD 96.05. The rupee closed at 95.11 to the dollar and India VIX rose 6.14% to 11.92. Asian markets closed mixed on Wednesday, with the Kospi up 1.40% and Shanghai up 0.28% against Nikkei -0.19% and Hang Seng -0.21%. Today is a BSE Sensex weekly options expiry.

Sensex, Nifty 50, Bank Nifty and Nifty IT are PREV CLOSE values from Wednesday, 9 September 2026. Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 are shown as percentage changes only, because no source published a verified closing level for either. Bank Nifty's level rests on a single source while its percentage change is corroborated by two. US figures are Wednesday's closes. The US 10-year yield is published as a band rather than a decimal, because five readings across four sources disagree at the second decimal place; the direction, fresh 52-week highs, is unambiguous. Brent is shown at the level three sources agree on, with the exact settlement not certified. USD/INR is the onshore spot close and must not be blended with the offshore quote. No GIFT Nifty level is published and no price from today's session appears anywhere in this edition. FII and DII figures are NSE provisional cash-market data. Cards are tinted by direction of market impact, not by arithmetic sign.
Market mood
Third Straight Decline as Crude Tops USD 100 and IT Falls
Both benchmarks fell for a third session, the Sensex 1.08% and the Nifty 0.86%, with the Nifty closing below 23,500. Nifty IT fell 3.24% and only Metal and Energy closed higher among the major sectorals. Brent moved above USD 100 for the first time since July, the rupee closed at 95.11 with the RBI reported to be selling dollars, and India VIX rose 6.14%. Wall Street closed lower for a third session and US 10-year yields printed fresh 52-week highs.
The PCJ desk read
The confirmed domestic tape is Wednesday, 9 September. The Sensex closed at 74,764.23, down 813.35 points, and the Nifty 50 at 23,431.50, down 203.60 - a third consecutive lower close. Both moves reconcile exactly against Tuesday's closes. Week to date, measured from Friday 4 September, the Nifty is 1.95% lower and the Sensex 2.29% lower. The composition changed from the previous session. Where Tuesday's decline sat almost entirely in large-cap financials, Wednesday's was market-wide: BSE breadth was 1,877 advances to 2,498 declines with 234 unchanged, and the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 fell 0.51% and 0.48% alongside the benchmarks. Nifty IT was the heaviest drag, closing 3.24% lower at 28,913.95, a level that reconciles exactly against Tuesday's 29,883.45. Infosys fell 4.34%, HCL Technologies 3.70%, Tech Mahindra 3.27%, Wipro 2.62% and TCS 2.11%, and outside the index Coforge closed 5.38% lower following a governance announcement. Financial Services fell 1.24% and Realty 2.23%. Against that, Metal closed 1.79% higher after a global producer announced a minimum 30% increase in graphite electrode prices, and Energy 0.63% higher with crude. Adani Enterprises led the index at 5.13% after a reported Rs. 9,825 crore external raise into its airports vertical. On flows, NSE provisional figures show FIIs net sellers of Rs. 582.99 crore against DII net buying of Rs. 1,509.04 crore - the domestic bid remains the larger of the two, as it has been on each of the last three sessions. India VIX rose 6.14% to 11.92, its sharpest rise of the three-session decline, though the absolute level remains low by historical standards. Valuation, on a third-party reproduction of NSE data, eased to a Nifty 50 P/E of 19.77 from 19.98.
Market internals and valuation
| Sector index | Move | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty Metal | +1.79% | One of only two sectorals higher |
| Nifty Energy | +0.63% | Rose with crude |
| Nifty Auto | -0.44% | Shallowest of the decliners |
| Nifty Fin. Services | -1.24% | Large-cap financials weighed |
| Nifty IT | -3.24% | Level reconciles against Tuesday |
Sectoral moves are Wednesday, 9 September closing percentages from the NSE index family. Nifty IT (-3.24%) carries a verified closing level of 28,913.95 that reconciles exactly against Tuesday's 29,883.45. Metal (+1.79%), Energy (+0.63%), Auto (-0.44%), Consumer Durables (-0.58%), Pharma (-0.70%), FMCG (-0.96%), Financial Services (-1.24%) and Realty (-2.23%) are percentage changes only; no source published closing levels for them. Two of the eleven major sectorals closed higher. A second wire published a materially different sectoral set for the same session; it appears to be the BSE index family and the two are not mixed here. Nifty PSU Bank has no verified closing percentage from any source and is omitted rather than estimated, and Nifty Media is omitted because its only figure comes from the disputed set.
| Breadth | Reading |
|---|---|
| Consecutive lower closes | 3 |
| BSE advances / declines | 1,877 / 2,498 |
| Nifty IT vs Nifty Metal | -3.24% / +1.79% |
Advance/decline counts are BSE figures for the 9 September close, reported by a single source: 1,877 shares rose, 2,498 fell and 234 were unchanged. No NSE closing breadth was published by any source checked, so none is shown. The counts confirm what the indices imply - with both the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 also lower, this was a market-wide decline rather than a narrow one, in contrast to the previous session.
| Top gainers (Nifty 50) | Move | Top losers (Nifty 50) | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adani Enterprises | +5.13% | Infosys | -4.34% |
| Max Healthcare | +4.48% | HDFC Life | -3.71% |
| Adani Ports | +3.80% | HCL Technologies | -3.70% |
| Coal India | +2.56% | Tech Mahindra | -3.27% |
Nifty 50 constituents only, Wednesday, 9 September close. Four gainers are shown rather than five, because no source ranks a fifth Nifty 50 constituent as higher on the session and no name is added to complete the list. TCS closed 2.11% lower, a Nifty 50 member but outside the five largest decliners. Outside the Nifty 50, Coforge closed 5.38% lower as the largest decliner in the IT pack, and Graphite India closed 14.81% higher; those are wider-universe moves and are not presented as Nifty 50 movers.
| Valuation | Value | As of |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 P/E | 19.77 | 9 Sep, per Tickertape - NOT an NSE-sourced figure; 19.98 on 8 Sep |
| Nifty 50 P/B | 2.87 | 9 Sep, same source and caveat; 2.86 on 8 Sep, within rounding |
The NSE end-of-day index file returned an error on both archive hosts and the live NSE indices page carries no valuation ratios, so no NSE-sourced figure was obtainable. The numbers above are attributed to a named third-party aggregator reproducing NSE data and must not be read as NSE data. The 9 September pair is single-sourced; the 8 September pair (19.98 and 2.86) was dual-sourced. The Nifty 50 dividend yield is omitted entirely: one source shows 1.73% for 9 September and another 1.20% for 8 September, a move that is not mechanically possible on a 0.86% index decline, so neither is published.

Global and macro factors
A. Crude and the Middle East
- Brent moved above USD 100 a barrel on Wednesday 9 September, the first time since July, with WTI reported at USD 96.05. Three independent sources confirm the USD 100 handle.
- The exact settlement is not certified: the day's change is reported variously at +2.74%, +2.96% and +3.4% across sources, so a single settlement figure is not published here.
- Reported drivers are renewed military exchanges involving the United States and Iran and severe disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping, with Gulf exports reported down from about 18 million barrels a day before the conflict to about 9 million by August.
- India imports roughly 90% of its crude requirement, and the Indian basket is reported near USD 109. A sustained level here feeds the import bill, the inflation path, the rupee and the margins of oil marketing, aviation, paints, tyres and chemicals.
B. The Overnight Session and US Rates
- Wall Street closed lower for a third session: Dow -0.80% to 52,380.66, S and P 500 -0.50% to 7,636.36, Nasdaq Composite -0.60% to 26,253.34. Small caps were weakest, the Russell 2000 down 1.30%.
- US 10-year Treasury yields are at fresh 52-week highs. Five readings across four sources place the level between 4.80% and 4.84%; because they disagree at the second decimal, a band is published rather than a figure.
- Positioning is reported as defensive ahead of US producer price data and the 16 September FOMC decision, with the crude move reviving concern about the inflation path.
- Asian markets closed Wednesday mixed - KOSPI +1.40% at 7,051.64, Shanghai Composite +0.28% at 3,951.51, Nikkei 225 -0.19% at 65,146.00, Hang Seng -0.21% at 25,265.00, ASX 200 -0.11%. These are Wednesday closes, not live quotes.
C. Flows, the Rupee and the Primary Market
- NSE provisional cash-market figures show FIIs net sellers of Rs. 582.99 crore on Wednesday, against DII net buying of Rs. 1,509.04 crore. On Tuesday the figures were Rs. 123.19 crore of FII sales and Rs. 1,349.64 crore of DII buying.
- A month-to-date FII figure is not published: three sources produced four mutually contradictory totals, none of which reconciles with the daily series those same sources publish. The daily rows are usable individually; the aggregate is not.
- The rupee closed at 95.11 to the dollar onshore, with an intra-day low reported at 95.23. The RBI is reported to have sold spot dollars and run near-maturity sell-buy swaps of about USD 1 billion across September and October tenors, with the one-year forward implied yield up 11 basis points to 3.16%.
- In the primary market, three mainboard issues close today and one closes tomorrow, three BSE SME issues open today, and Pranav Constructions is due for allotment. No listing was identified for today.

Global and geopolitical factors
Crude above USD 100 on renewed Middle East conflict (HIGH)
What was reported: Brent moved above USD 100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since July, with WTI reported at USD 96.05, on renewed military exchanges involving the United States and Iran and severe disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping. Gulf exports are reported to have fallen from about 18 million barrels a day before the conflict to about 9 million by August. For India, a large net crude importer with the basket reported near USD 109, the transmission runs through the import bill, the inflation path, the rupee and the margins of oil marketing, aviation, paints and chemicals companies.
Rupee at 95.11 with the central bank reported active (HIGH)
What was reported: The rupee closed at 95.11 to the dollar onshore on Wednesday with an intra-day low reported at 95.23. The RBI is reported to have sold spot dollars and run near-maturity sell-buy swaps of about USD 1 billion across September and October tenors. Forward premiums rose, with the one-year implied yield up 11 basis points to 3.16%, a three-month high, while the banking system liquidity surplus is reported at Rs. 10.48 trillion. A defended currency changes the import-cost path and the translation position of exporters.
US yields at 52-week highs into the FOMC decision (MEDIUM)
What was reported: US 10-year Treasury yields reached fresh 52-week highs on Wednesday, in the 4.80 to 4.84% area across sources, as the crude move revived concern about the inflation path. Wall Street closed lower for a third session with the Russell 2000 down 1.30%. The FOMC decision is due on 16 September, with producer price data before it. Higher developed-market yields affect the relative case for emerging-market allocation and the cost of dollar funding.
Closing note
Markets enter the session after a third consecutive decline. The Sensex closed at 74,764.23 and the Nifty 50 at 23,431.50 on Wednesday, leaving the Nifty 1.95% lower week to date against Friday's close. Unlike Tuesday, the weakness was market-wide: BSE breadth was 1,877 advances to 2,498 declines, both the Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 closed lower, and only Metal (+1.79%) and Energy (+0.63%) finished higher among the major sectorals. Nifty IT fell 3.24%, the heaviest single-sector move of the session.
The overnight inputs are not supportive. Wall Street closed lower for a third session with the Dow down 0.80% and the Russell 2000 down 1.30%, and US 10-year yields sit at fresh 52-week highs in the 4.80 to 4.84% area ahead of the 16 September FOMC decision. Crude sits behind both tapes, with Brent above USD 100 a barrel for the first time since July. The rupee closed at 95.11 with the RBI reported to have sold spot dollars and run near-maturity swaps, and India VIX rose 6.14% to 11.92. Institutional flows remain net supportive domestically, DIIs buying Rs. 1,509.04 crore against FII sales of Rs. 582.99 crore on provisional figures.
For the days ahead, today is a BSE Sensex weekly options expiry, and three mainboard IPOs - Prasol Chemicals, Kanohar Electricals and Glass Wall Systems - close for subscription. Pranav Constructions allotment is due today and Arcil closes tomorrow. No mainboard or SME listing was identified for today, and the earnings slate is empty: Q1 FY27 reporting concluded in August and Q2 FY27 begins in mid-October. The next market closure is Monday 14 September for Ganesh Chaturthi, the only exchange holiday this month, and August CPI and WPI are expected around that date, which would place both prints into the Tuesday 15 September session alongside August trade data and the NSE weekly expiry. The next RBI Monetary Policy Committee decision is due on 7 October.

Sources. Prior-session (9 September 2026) index, sectoral, movers, breadth and streak data: Business Standard close report and capital-market wrap, the Business Standard Quick Wrap for Nifty IT, 5paisa post-market update, The Tribune carrying PTI, and Liquide close wrap, with the 8 September Business Standard close report used as the prior-session anchor for arithmetic reconciliation and the 4 September close report supplying the prior-week comparison. Bank Nifty's closing level is single-sourced to Liquide and its percentage change corroborated by 5paisa. Sectoral percentages are the NSE index family; a second wire published a materially different set for the same session that appears to be the BSE family, and the two are not mixed. Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Media are omitted for want of a verified figure, and closing levels for the remaining sectorals are omitted because none was published. Advance/decline counts are BSE figures from the Business Standard capital-market wrap, single-sourced; no NSE closing breadth was published. Flows: NSE provisional cash-market data for 9 September as reported by India IPO and corroborated by Craytheon; no month-to-date FII figure is published because the available totals are mutually contradictory. India VIX: 5paisa, cross-checked against vizzingdata and Investing.com; one vendor's contradictory reading was discarded. Valuation: Tickertape for 9 September, cross-checked against Craytheon and IndexPE for 8 September; the dividend yield is omitted because two sources are mechanically irreconcilable. US closes: Associated Press wire, cross-checked against Investrade and Charles Schwab. The US 10-year yield is published as a band because five readings across four sources disagree at the second decimal. Asian closes for 9 September: Investing.com dated historical tables, each reconciled arithmetically. Brent, WTI, gold and the dollar index: Investing.com, TheStreet and USAGOLD, with the Brent settlement left uncertified. Rupee: Business Standard onshore close. Corporate and policy items: Business Standard Stock Alert and capital-market news, Business Today, and Chittorgarh, IPO Watch and Business Standard for primary-market details. Holiday status verified against multiple 2026 exchange holiday listings. No price from today's session appears anywhere in this edition.
