A demat account holds your shares and securities in electronic form with a depository (NSDL or CDSL), while a linked trading account lets you buy and sell on NSE and BSE. Across Delhi NCR the account is opened online with Aadhaar-based eKYC — here is exactly what you need and how it works.
Documents required
PAN card, Aadhaar linked to your mobile number (for OTP eKYC), a bank proof (cancelled cheque or statement), and a signature on plain paper. To activate F&O or commodities, add an income proof — latest salary slip, ITR acknowledgement or a 6-month bank statement.
The step-by-step process
1. Start the online application and enter PAN + Aadhaar. 2. Complete Aadhaar OTP eKYC. 3. Upload bank proof and signature. 4. Choose your segments (equity, F&O, commodity, currency). 5. E-sign with Aadhaar. Most Delhi-NCR applications are activated the same day.
What a demat account costs
Account opening is often free or low-cost. Ongoing costs are brokerage per trade, annual demat maintenance charges (AMC), and statutory charges (STT, GST, stamp duty, exchange fees). Always read the tariff sheet — see PCJ charges.
Keeping your account safe
Your shares sit with the depository, not the broker. Register for transaction alerts from NSDL/CDSL and the exchange, never share OTPs or passwords, and be wary of anyone promising assured returns or asking for money to a personal account. Genuine brokers publish a grievance and SCORES/ODR escalation route.
