How to choose a mutual fund app in India: a 10-point checklist

Dozens of apps will happily take your SIP. Before you trust one with your money and your data, run it through this checklist — it takes ten minutes and filters out most future regrets.

Quick answer: Judge a mutual fund app on who is behind it, not its interface. Check the regulated entity and its registration numbers (AMFI ARN for distributors, SEBI registration for brokers — verifiable on amfiindia.com and sebi.gov.in), whether it clearly says if it offers regular or direct plans, AMC coverage, portfolio consolidation, statements, human support, security practices, cost transparency and a published grievance path. Any app that hides who runs it, or promises returns, fails the test immediately.

The 10-point checklist

Your checklist: 0 / 10

Tap each point once you have verified it for any app you are evaluating.

  1. A verifiable regulated entity behind it. The app must name its company and registration — an AMFI-registered distributor (ARN) or SEBI-registered intermediary. Verify independently: how to verify a SEBI-registered broker. (PCJ Wealth is run by PCJ Holdings Pvt. Ltd., ARN-63632, SEBI INZ000068536 — verify on our registrations page.)
  2. Regular vs direct plans, stated plainly. Distributor apps offer regular plans (commission inside the expense ratio, service included); direct platforms offer direct plans (lower expense ratio, no distributor service). Both are legitimate — an app that is vague about which it sells is the red flag. See direct vs regular.
  3. AMC coverage. Can you invest across most major fund houses, or only a promoted shelf? Breadth matters when your needs change.
  4. One consolidated portfolio view. Value, invested amount, allocation and XIRR across all your schemes — including, ideally, family accounts.
  5. Full SIP controls. Start, step-up, pause, modify and stop — in the app, without paperwork.
  6. Statements on demand. Valuation, transaction and capital-gains statements you can download at tax time without emailing anyone.
  7. A human you can reach. When markets fall or a KYC snag appears, a named Relationship Manager or a real support line beats a chatbot queue. Ask: who do I call?
  8. Security basics. App lock/biometric login, OTP-verified transactions, and payments flowing to the mutual fund's collection accounts — never to any individual's account.
  9. Costs in the open. Account fees (if any), and clarity that scheme expense ratios apply as per scheme documents. Walk away from anything promising "guaranteed" or "assured" returns — mutual funds cannot guarantee returns.
  10. A published grievance path. A proper intermediary publishes its complaint process and escalation to SEBI SCORES — like our grievance redressal page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apps run by registered intermediaries are a regulated channel: your money goes to the mutual fund, units are held in your name, and the platform is answerable under SEBI/AMFI frameworks. The safety check is the entity behind the app and its registrations — verify them on amfiindia.com or sebi.gov.in before investing. Market risk, of course, remains: mutual fund investments are subject to market risks.

Your units live with the AMC in your folio, not inside the app. If a platform shuts, your investments remain yours — you can service them directly with the AMCs or through another intermediary.

There is no single "best" — it depends on whether you want direct plans with no service or regular plans with a human behind them, which AMCs you use, and how much support you expect. Run any app through the 10-point checklist above and the right one for you becomes obvious.

Yes. Existing folios can typically be mapped or transferred so they appear in your new platform's portfolio view — the units themselves never leave the AMC. Your new distributor or RM can guide the process.

Models vary: distributor apps are typically free to use (the distributor earns commission within the scheme's expense ratio on regular plans); some direct platforms charge subscription or convenience fees. Whatever the model, it should be stated openly.
